Stats are in

J had his three year check up last week, and I'm thrilled to report that it went MUCH better than his two year check-up that he screamed through half of.  This year, he didn't bat an eye when they called his name to take him back, and followed directions well so they could weigh and measure him.  And he loved seeing all the tools like he has in his doctor kit at home being put to real life use.

His doctor is very happy with his growth and development and so are we.

Here are his most recent stats:

  • Weight = 37 lbs (90-95%)
  • Height = 40.5" (95% and according to the nurse, the average height of a 5-year old - what?!)
With the rate he's growing, he'll be taller than me before I know it!

Party Time

On J's actual birthday, we headed to Red Robin (his favorite restaurant) for his favorite dinner (mac & cheese, oranges and milk) along with Gramma Joan.  Dinner was followed by an ice cream sundae that he devored on his own, after being sung to by a few waiters. He said he'd like to have them sing to him, but I wasn't sure if he truly would enjoy it...but aside from looking a little nervous, he appeared to love every minute of it.  He then enjoyed opening gifts from his grandparents, one of our neighbors and us and had a hard time deciding what to play with with first.

This past weekend, after a laid back celebration last year, we decided to throw J a bit of a party for this birthday.  It was also very well deserved given all the changes he's put up with over the past few months.  With his love of Dora, we couldn't think of a better theme for the party, even though all the decorations were a bit feminine.

On Saturday, our families and a few of our close friends and their kids came over to celebrate the birthday boy.  With life being so crazy lately, convenience won out - decorations and the cake were store bought, and the food was provided by Qdoba.  Everyone seemed to enjoy the food though (and we have enough leftovers that I didn't have to cook for a few nights - love that!) and the cake turned out great and received many compliments.

Jackson was completely spoiled by everyone, receiving all kinds of great gifts and he was a busy boy the rest of the weekend, playing with everything.  He was having so much fun on the day of his party, he skipped his nap (for the first time ever!) so that he could keep playing.  He handled it much better than I'd expected - he just started to look a bit sleepy in the car on the way to a park later that afternoon.  The missed nap meant an early bedtime (7:15 vs. 8 or 8:30), and he feel asleep within minutes of his head hitting the pillow (rather than the 60+ mins of singing and talking that usually occurs).

We all had a great time celebrating Jackson over his birthday week.  It's always such fun to experience an event like a birthday through a child's eyes.

Jackson was obsessed with counting down to his birthday.  It was so exciting to remove that final ring on April 23!

3 Months

Another month has quickly passed and Cole is three months old!

His schedule remains very similar to last month, but we've dropped the second overnight feeding completely, and there have been numerous times over the past three weeks that he's slept all night, through his 2 or 3 a.m. feeding!  The first week, he had four all nighters (of sleeping) in a row, and then during the past two weeks, he's had three all nighters in a row.  While it often takes a few trips into a room (between 8 and 9 p.m.)  after we put him down before he finally goes to sleep, he's slept anywhere from 9 to 11 hours straight on these nights.  I am loving the extra sleep - it's amazing what 6+ straight hours of sleep can do for a mama.

In other news, he continues to occasionally bust out of his swaddle - the small ones are starting to get too small, but the bigger ones are too big - which tends to wake him up one the nights he doesn't sleep all night, and then he realizes he's hungry.  We've started to swaddle him with one arm out during naps to start to wean him from the swaddle and he seems to tolerate this just fine; however I'm nervous to attempt this overnight right now, given that he's on such a good all nighter streak.  Would rather get that happening more consistently before introducing a big change like taking away the swaddle.  So, in the meantime,  we've started using the "Miracle Blanket" as his swaddle at night and hope that keeps our little Houdini in until we're ready to get rid of it.

An informal weight check at home the other day had Cole at 14.8 lbs.  Can't wait to see where he is at his four month check up next month.

We are all loving every day with this happy chunky monkey!

Easter Weekend

A little late, but better late than never, right?

With no big plans for Easter weekend, my parents decided to come over for a quick visit to see the boys and to (finally!) cash in a John Howie gift card.  In addition to their help with the boys throughout Saturday, they watched the kiddos after their JH dinner, so that we could get a much needed date night!  Corey and I headed to Sip for some wine and dessert (delish ice cream sandwiches for me and a salad for him (who gets salad for dessert?!).  It was great to get out together and chat without interruptions.

J was eager to start his Easter egg hunt first Sunday morning. Luckily the rain held off, which allowed the Easter bunny to hide the eggs outside, in some really great places. J thoroughly enjoyed the egg hunt, as well as opening all the eggs up to find out what was inside.  No surprise the eggs with jelly beans or chocolate Cadbury eggs were deemed the best his book.  He also loved opening all of his Easter presents, and boy there were a bunch of them between grandparents, great grandma and us.  He is a spoiled kiddo!

Here are a few photos from our relaxing Easter celebration.

That Easter bunny really got creative, even using Grampa and Gramma's car to hid eggs.

The first of many presents to be opened last week (since his birthday was just days after Easter - more to come in another post soon).

Enjoying a new, musical Dora book - I knew it'd be a hit since it touches on three of his favorite things (books, music and Dora).

A family pic in honor of Easter.  Only took about 20 takes to capture.  We were all exhausted afterwards.

Cole looking handsome in his Easter best - this is an outfit Corey's parents picked up for J when they went to Paris shortly after he was born. So fun to get to see it on one of our babes again!

Brotherly love. I don't think things like this will ever get old.

Happy Birthday, Jackson!

Our big boy is 3!

Jackson has grown and developed so much over the last year, it's amazing.  And on top of it all, he's handled many big changes like a champ.  He's moved into a big boy bed, become a big brother, been potty trained, and changed classes at school - all of which happened in just the last few months.

He's been extremely excited for his birthday and has had a countdown in the works for 50+ days. Corey added an app to his phone to countdown the days remaining and I made him a paper chain, where he gets to remove a ring each day. He loves seeing how many days are left each morning and though he almost always knows exactly how many are left, he of course still uses both the app and chain to double check.

Here are few of the things he learned to do, since turning two:
  • Say the ABCs
  • Count to 100, and can count backwards from 20
  • Count to 15 in Spanish
  • Knows all his colors (can't remember if this happened before he turned three) and a few of them in Spanish
  • Knows all days of the week, the order and most importantly, how many days left until the weekend on any given day (his teachers love this one)
  • Knows all the months, their order and important events in some of them (i.e. Mother's Day is in May and he gets to help daddy pick out a present for me; Christmas is in December)
  • Can (finally!) quickly hold up two fingers to show his current age, and three fingers to show his new age (though three still takes some help with the other hand)
  • Ride his big wheels type bike (still working on fully understanding turning), and is starting to get the hang of his Strider bike
  • Overcome his fear of pools, water and swimming
  • Overcome his fear of haircuts
  • Become MUCH less shy (I haven't heard "I don't wanna say 'hi'!" from him before going into someplace new or with people he doesn't know in months; in fact, he's often the first one to say hi to new people, like checkers at the grocery store)
  • Understands the concept of time and is very interested in what time it is at any given point during the day, how much longer until something occurs (i.e. how long until my mom picks me up/how long until 4:30 (which is my usual pick up time)) and can do simple math (if we tell him at 4 p.m. he has 10 minutes until we start doing something else, he can tell you how many minutes are left at 4:01, 4:02...)
  • Has memorized (nearly word for word) several of his books, which he likes to "read" to us at night.
  • Stopped using his bink for naptime at school, which is part of the transition from his old class to his new class.
His memory is impeccable which makes him great at memory games, as well as remembering specifics, details and facts from months prior.  This includes things we've told him, promises we've made him, and who has given him various toys or clothes.  On our way to his haircut the other day, which was the first one in over two months, he said, "If I'm a good boy, I should probably get a cookie afterwards" as he remembered that he's had a Specialties cookie afterwards in the past before.  How can you say no to that?!  And his knack for remembering what number each song is on a given CD (and he has 20+ CDs mind you) is pretty darn amazing.  Speaking of music, I love when he sings along to songs --- sometimes he sings the right words, and sometimes not so much...but cute nonetheless.

While becoming a big brother was a bit rough at the very beginning (which was expected of course), he quickly grew accustomed to the change and truly loves Cole now. He's always asking if Cole can play with him (i.e. throw a ball, etc.), which we help Cole do, and he loves to help however needed (putting Cole's bink back in, turning on his swing or bouncer, etc.)  He even uses a baby voice to talk to him and loves to give unsolicited kisses and hugs.  The other day, he even played with Cole on his play mat - I'd put Cole there while I made dinner, and I looked over and Jackson was down on the floor talking to him, reading him books, and giving him pretend waffles from his kitchen.  Cole knows there's something special about Jackson, and that he's different than Corey and I, as he saves his biggest smiles for him and is always very interested in watching J, no matter what he's doing.

J's so smart I find it hard to reason with or make deals with him at times, and then I feel completely silly for being duped by a two-year old!  I wasn't aware that he'd stopped using his bink at naptime and he just happened to tell me in passing on our drive home from school a week or so after the change.  When I asked, his teachers said he was completely unphased by it, so I told J that I thought he could stop using it at home since he was such a big boy now, and his reply was, "If I don't use it at home, I'd probably be pretty sad.  Maybe in June. No wait, maybe in July..."

His rough streak at bedtime/overnight has greatly improved with continued Mommy and Jackson time (and sometimes "family time", which he asks for rather than just Mommy and Jackson time), and most recently a countdown timer and a Get Ready for Bed Checklist.  He has 30 minutes to get all ready, read books, watch videos and cuddle, so he's learning how to budget his time to get through the non fun stuff (potty, PJs, brushing teeth) so he has more time for the fun stuff (books, videos and cuddles).  He loves being able to see how much time is left at any given point in the routine (and has even been known to stare at it while cuddling, which doesn't make cuddle time much fun for us - ha), and to turn the timer off when the alarm sounds.

Potty training continues to go well and he hadn't had an accident in over two weeks...until one at school earlier this week.

We are so proud of the big boy he's become, and love him to pieces.  I can't wait to see what the next year brings.

Happy birthday, Jackson!

Nearly every weekend includes at least one trip to the park - this kid LOVES his park time.

Quite the multi-tasker - chatting with Grampa Kent on the phone, helping Cole play and talking to me.

Is he trying to tell us he wants a career in modeling?

Standard weekend morning position, while perusing YouTube Play Doh videos.

Playing with one of the many toys he received for pooping on the toilet.

Similarities

While there are times that Cole makes a certain face or does certain things that remind us of Jackson as a baby, he doesn't look as much like J as I originally expected, especially given Cole's lack of hair.  That said, Corey found this old pic of Jackson (on the left) and compared it to a recent photo of Cole, and I couldn't help but see the similarities.

What do you think?!  (Make sure to cover Jackson's amazing hair before you compare...)

Potty Training in Progress

We've officially started potty training, and I'm thrilled to say that Jackson has been diaper free since last Saturday!

We'd heard great things about waiting to potty train until he was 110% ready, and that it would then be a very quick process, so prior to last week, we hadn't really done any potty training short of talking a lot about it.  Occasionally he would want to sit on the toilet to "try" to pee (though he never went) and at school, they tend to have them "try" with a diaper change, but we'd never done anything else to support this transition, so we were nervous about how it would go.  We also weren't sure when he'd be fully ready.  He did have dry diapers more often than not, so we figured he'd be ready soon.

Knowing that he had to be 3 as well as potty trained to move up to the next class at school, which becomes his first preschool class come fall, we had incentive to get things moving.  In addition, one of his best friends and his favorite teacher had moved to this class, so J was looking forward to moving up.  Out of the blue last week, he asked, "When are we going to potty train me?", which I took as meaning he was finally fully ready.  So, we started talking a lot about potty training and what it meant, we bought Elmo books and a DVD about potty training, and we stocked up on stickers (one for every try, regardless of whether he goes), M&Ms (2 for each pee; 4 for each poop) and a bucket full of toy prizes (to choose from every time he poops).  I picked him up a bit early from school one day, and we headed to Fred Meyer to pick out some big boy underwear together.

On Saturday morning, he threw away his diapers (told him that he wouldn't have the option of wearing them; he asked about Cole's but we told him those would be too small), put on underwear, and headed to the toilet every 30 minutes or so.  Turns out, he has his mom's camel bladder and really doesn't have to go often (he's only been going about 3 times per day).  As an added incentive to go the first time, we told him he could go to the park (his favorite weekend activity), even though it was pouring rain. He finally peed and off to the park he and I went.  We hit up the bathroom upon our arrival and he thought the park bathrooms were pretty cool - you get to lock and unlock the stall door, use a fun button to flush the toilet, another button to get soap and to turn on the water, and he was able to use a heated hand dryer for the first time.  So of course, he thought he had to go two more times in the 20 minutes we were there (nothing came out) and again as soon as I'd gotten him in his car seat to head home.  I quickly realized it was just the novelty of the bathroom but in the interest of avoiding accidents, we kept going.  So, in 25 minutes, we hit up the park bathroom four times (more times than I have ever been in a park bathroom in my life).  By that last time, the new rule was that he only got to do all the buttons/locks himself if he actually went, which he did during our final trip.

That first day, he had no accidents until right before bed, when he had two.  The next day, he had a few in the morning and one in the afternoon, but then was accident free from Sunday evening through Friday morning, where he had his first accident at school.  Several of those days, he didn't actually go for well over 12 hours - he'd go before bed but not again until the next afternoon at school (though not for lack of trying...again, the camel bladder).  Corey told him if he made it all week at school without an accident he could pick out a toy at the store, but when he went to pick Jackson up from school yesterday, J was so sad that he'd had an accident that morning, so Corey told him he'd still done great and told him he could pick out a Play Doh set, which we did last night.  (To add to the sadness, J was wearing school issued shoes that were about 5 sizes too big since his had gotten soaked.)

Because he goes so infrequently and really has only gone during a scheduled trip (even after telling us he doesn't have to go), we're not 100% sure yet that he knows when he has to pee, but he definitely knows when he has to poop - we were outside working in the yard today, and he got quiet and then all of a sudden yelled, "I have to poop, Mommy!"  You've never seen me jump up and run as fast as I did then.  We were stripping muddy shoes and pants off as we ran up the driveway and into the garage. All worth it though - he made it in time!

He's been wearing Pull Ups for naps and nighttime, just to be safe, but since starting potty training (and 99% of the time for months leading up to it), he's been dry during both.

Overall, he's doing an amazing job, and we are so very proud of him.  And it's so nice to have one less kiddo in diapers!

Here's J, picking out packs of big boy undies.  As he proudly carried them up to the front of the store and I tried to get some video of this monumental occasion, but he told me "Mommy!  Stop it!".  I thought kids only started to be embarrassed by their parents when they were in their teens?!   Then as we were passing the Starbucks stand on our way to the check stands and he put his undies up on the Starbucks counter - I guess we've bought enough coffee there that he thought that was the check stand.  Ha!

Right-handed?

I know it's way too early to tell for sure, but I'm willing to bet we have another right-handed child in our midst.

All day today, Cole was making fists with his right hand, and kept trying very hard to get it to move where he wanted.  It started on the playmat, where he spent a good 10-15 minutes staring at the duck and trying very hard to hit it with his fist. Normally his flailing arms hit anything in their path, but today, he consistently batted at only this duck with that hand.  After that, anytime he was awake, he continued to appear to be trying to control that arm and move it where he wanted (vs. the sporadic arm movements we're used to seeing).

It was so cute to see him trying to hard (which of course made him drool) and learning a new trick.

"Yay, me!"

"Oh!  There's that hand again!"

"Don't hit myself in the face.  Don't hit myself in the face..."
